M'boro Season 09/10 - Boro Hits Three

Macclesfield ..... 0
Middlesbrough..3

MIDDLESBROUGH scored three goals in 15 second-half minutes as they made a winning start to their pre-season programme courtesy of a 3-0 win at Macclesfield.

Julio Arca converted from the penalty spot to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute, before second-half strike duo Marvin Emnes and Jonathan Franks scored a goal apiece to secure a comfortable victory over Boro's League Two opponents.

Gareth Southgate opted to change all ten outfield players at half-time, and the Boro boss was pleased with his side's opening run-out of the pre-season programme.

David Wheater, Andrew Taylor, Adam Johnson, Mohamed Shawky and Tuncay Sanli were all absent following their international exertions, but with the likes of Arca, Gary O'Neil, Matthew Bates and Tony McMahon all involved, Boro boasted too much quality for their lower-league opponents.

Arca broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Macclesfield defender Shaun Brisley handled O'Neil's left-wing cross, while Emnes displayed excellent footwork in the penalty box before blasting a searing drive past home goalkeeper Patrick Gamble.

Franks rounded off the win with three minutes left, slotting home from close range after Arca's through ball dissected the Macclesfield defence.
