Leroy Lita's superb individual goal against ex-club Reading extended the Royals' winless home run to 15 games.
The striker was found by a clearance from Gary O'Neil and he spun round two defenders before firing past advancing goalkeeper Adam Federici (55).
Sean St Ledger had put Boro ahead with a deflected header from Adam Johnson's corner (12), before Lita's effort which secured a first win in four games.
